Storing samples and cut-off times
How to keep samples before collection, and when they need to reach us.
Storing samples before collection
Keep samples out of direct sunlight until they're collected, stored by tube type:
| Tube | Store |
|---|---|
| Serum separator (gold) | Fridge, 2 to 8°C |
| EDTA (lavender) | Fridge, 2 to 8°C |
| Fluoride (grey) | Fridge, 2 to 8°C |
| Citrate (light blue) | Room temperature. Send the same day |
| Urine | Fridge, 2 to 8°C |
Some tests are light-sensitive (for example vitamins A and E, and bilirubin): wrap the tube in foil.
How quickly samples need to reach us
Samples should reach the lab within 24 hours of being taken. Some tests need to arrive sooner, or need special handling such as freezing. These are shown in each test's instructions in Tests List.
Collection cut-off times
Book by 3pm for a courier collection the same day. The lab receives samples 8am to 8pm, Monday to Friday, and on Saturday mornings.
If you've missed the cut-off, call or WhatsApp us on 020 4525 8805 and we'll advise.
Weekends and bank holidays
We collect and receive samples on Saturday mornings. We're closed on Sundays and bank holidays.
For samples taken late on Friday, store them as above and book a Saturday morning collection. If that isn't possible, call us to check whether they'll still be fit to test on Monday.
